Title: The Roads Only Lead to You
Summary: Merlin looks back on his time at Camelot.
Prompt: #243: Looking Back
Author's Notes: I wrote this in my iPad and I have no word counter :/
It would seem it was a lifetime ago he arrived in Camelot. Merlin's memories are still fresh though, his mother's parting words and loving embrace, Uther's tyranny, Gaius' welcoming smile, Arthur's infuriating self. It all helped him shape him into the man he is today.
Sometimes he wonders if he'd be the Merlin he greets each morning in the mirror if he had stayed in Ealdor, if he'd somehow smile differently.
His magic could also be different. Less vibrant, more subdued. Without a purpose or direction.
Most of all he wonders what his life could mean without Arthur, if they had never crossed paths. Sure, Merlin would be nobody's manservant but however odd it might sound he'd feel there is something missing, namely Arthur. He'd miss his smile early in the mornings before he's fully awake and starts to terrorize him with silly tasks, the way he lets his guard down around Merlin when no one is paying attention to them. He'd miss every single thing about Arthur every day without even knowing what the hole in his chest means. Because for every reason Merlin has to dislike him, there is another one to absolutely love him.
Maybe, just maybe coming to Camelot meant he was being led to his real destiny: Arthur.
