The evening had suddenly grown cold. Will shouldn't be surprised. Or jealous. Or angry. He'd known in his heart for years that things would turn out this way.
Merlin smiled that silly grin, unsuspecting. He was happy. Really, wasn't that what mattered?
Unwelcome memories flashed through his mind. Merlin pronouncing Will his "best friend forever" in first grade. Splashing through the mud, desperately trying to catch the elusive frogs the rain brought. Staying up until the wee hours of the morning, Merlin trying to stifle that perfectly imperfect laugh of his with his fists.
"Of course I'll be your best man, Merlin."
With a relieved laugh, Merlin's arms wrapped tightly around his oldest, dearest friend.
"You're the best, Will. I love you."
The words were right, but the context was all wrong.
Author's Closing notes: I can't be the only one with a soft spot for Merlin/Will ... right? :D (And, as always, Merlin does not belong to me.)
