George finished adjusting Merlin’s midnight blue robes. “Is there anything else you require, my lords?”
“No, George, that’s fine. You may go,” said Arthur.
George left, and Merlin came up behind Arthur and wrapped his arms around Arthur’s waist. Arthur placed his hands over Merlin’s, and said quietly, “You know, I dreamt of this when I was very little.”
“You dreamt of your man-servant, turned court sorcerer, turned king’s consort, snuggling up behind you and kissing your neck like this,” questioned Merlin, softly gnawing at that sensitive spot he was so fond of.
“When I was very small my nursemaid told me that one day I would be king and that I would have a queen to sit beside me, like my father had had my mother,” said Arthur. “I told her that I didn’t want a queen, because I was going to have a best friend, who was a boy like me sitting next to me.”
Merlin snorted. “How did that go over?”
“Well, in retrospect, I think Hilda might have been afraid to contradict even a five year old crown prince. I remember she did ask me why I wanted a boy for my consort, but I thought that was a very silly question. She also discouraged me from mentioning my plans to the king. I only ever told Morgana.”
“I wonder if Uther is turning in his grave. Does it bother you to know he wouldn’t approve?”
Arthur turned in Merlin’s arms and looked at him as if he were examining him for injury. “Merlin, think hard sweetheart—can you imagine something my father would have hated even more about you than the fact that you are not a girl?”
Blushing, Merlin poked Arthur in the ribs, but Arthur just grabbed Merlin’s face and kissed him firmly. “I have been waiting for this day my whole life. Are you ready to be by my side for the rest of our lives?”
“There is nowhere else I would choose to be. Lead on my king, or we will be late to our own ceremony.”
Arthur took Merlin’s hand, and led him from the room and into their future.
