“Arthur, I have wonderful news. I’m with child,” Gwen said.
The King stared at his wife, his mouth hanging open. Merlin snickered. Arthur whipped his head around to glare at his servant before slowly turning back to Gwen. “Are you serious?”
Gwen’s eyebrow rose. “Of course I’m serious. Why would I joke about something like this?”
“Isn’t it great news? I’m so excited for the two of you,” Merlin interjected.
Arthur turned to glare at Merlin again. “Are you saying you knew before I did?”
“Oh yeah. I mean, I live with Gaius, so I was there when—” He cut off when he saw Arthur’s hand twitch toward the goblet on the table.
“’I live with Gaius,’” Arthur mocked. He reached for the goblet and lifted it above his head.
Merlin flinched. “Now, let’s not be hasty . . .”
“Arthur, dear, you really need to calm down,” Gwen tried.
Too late. Arthur threw the goblet at Merlin, who ducked just in time. It missed him, but Merlin squeaked anyway. “I can’t help it, can I?”
Gwen rushed over to her husband and grabbed his hand, which was reaching for the other goblet. “Arthur, it really isn’t his fault. Let’s rejoice in the fact that we’ll soon have a son or daughter.”
Arthur looked into his wife’s eyes. “You’re right.” He took both her hands in his. “This is wonderful news and I couldn’t be happier. He bent down and kissed Gwen. The kiss quickly grew heated.
Merlin flushed then said, “I’ll, ah, just be going now.” He ran for the door and left as quietly as he could, leaving the King and Queen to their own celebrations.
