Once Arthur heard the baby’s cry, he took a step toward his chamber door. Merlin once again reached out a hand to stop him. “Best wait for Gaius to let you in.”
“And why is that?” Arthur demanded.
“Because you won’t be prepared for what you see in there. Childbirth is a messy business.”
“Fine.” Arthur crossed his arms. “But I’d better not have to wait long. I want to meet my son.”
“So you think he’s a boy?”
“Of course.”
Merlin snickered. “Okay, I just hope you’re not disappointed.”
Arthur’s face softened. “I believe in Guinevere.”
“Okay.”
At that moment, the door opened, revealing Gaius in a bloody apron. Arthur paled when he saw it. “Is everything all right?” The King asked, nodding at the apron.
Gaius looked down. “Oh. No, everything’s fine. Come inside and meet your son.”
Arthur grinned at Merlin. “See, I was right.”
Merlin rolled his eyes. “Of course you were.”
Gaius gave him a questioning look, but Merlin waved him off. Both men followed Arthur into his chambers. Arthur headed for the bed where a tired, but smiling Gwen waited. “Hello, beautiful,” he told her, kissing her forehead.
“Meet your son,” she said, lifting the tiny bundle she held.
“Hello, little Amhar,” he said, taking the bundle from Gwen’s arms.
The baby looked up at him with blue eyes. Father and son stared at each other for a few moments. Arthur broke away to count Amhar’s fingers. A perfect ten. He looked back into his son’s eyes, taking in the wonder of the little being. Amhar yawned and Arthur said, “Looks like that’s my cue.” He handed him back to Guinevere, who took him with a smile. “You both get some rest now, all right?”
“We will.”
“You did well, Guinevere. I love you.”
