"You look miserable," Merlin says approaching Arthur with a glass of water and his medication. Arthur could kill him with the look he gives him, before it dissolves into a groan of pain as he tries to reach for the glass Merlin's offering him. He's probably hurt his left side again. His face is ghostly white, his blond hair glued with sweat to his forehead, Merlin worries his lip between his teeth.
"I am miserable," Arthur responds through gritted teeth, immediately swallowing the pills Merlin dumps in his open palm. Merlin hopes they'll do something to alleviate his pain. Quickly. "This is the absolute worst."
He hates to see Arthur like that, lying in bed, flinching every time he tries to find a more comfortable position, absolutely dejected. Merlin is going to kill Gwaine for tackling Arthur to the ground and the resulting broken rib. He tries to make things easier for Arthur, fluffing his pillows, talking nonsense, bringing him food to bed, tucking him in when he looks like he's two seconds away from passing out.
Merlin pulls out a pillow and blanket from the cupboard making for the door.
"Where do you think you're going?"
Merlin turns to face Arthur. "Um, to the living room?"
"No, stay with me."
"But--I can't. I could hurt you again. You know how I kick in my sleep," Merlin tries to reason with him, Arthur is always complaining about it.
"In sickness and in health, remember?" Arthur says, pats the empty spot on the bed. "Come on, Merlin, be my Florence Nightingale."
Merlin rounds the bed, getting under the covers. Arthur moves closer, Merlin slowly wraps an arm around his shoulders, his lips falling on Arthur's messy hair. Arthur sighs, stills.
"Merlin, tell me story."
And Merlin does.
