Arthur felt someone move behind him and up to the counter. Gwen. Before Arthur could introduce her to Merlin, Merlin smiled widely. “Gwen! You’re here too? I guess with a place called Camelot Coffee I should have expected it, but still I’m surprised. Is—”
Arthur cut him off. “Merlin, you still run at the mouth, don’t you? Gwen, this is Merlin. He’s . . . an old friend.”
“Very old.” Merlin chuckled.
“Pleased to meet you.” She held out her hand, which Merlin took. They both watched as surprise washed over Gwen’s face and she fell into a trance for a minute or so.
“Is that what happened to me?” Arthur asked Merlin.
“Pretty much. It’s odd to watch, isn’t it?”
“You’re telling me.”
When Gwen came to her senses, she dove over the counter to embrace Merlin. He grinned madly. “Merlin! It’s so good to see you again. Have you been alive this whole time?”
Merlin frowned. “Unfortunately, yes.”
Arthur looked between the other two. “What do you mean ‘alive all this time’?”
Gwen and Merlin turned to Arthur. “That’s right. I never told you,” Merlin replied.
“Told me what? Explain.”
Merlin chuckled. “Yes, sire. You see, I’m the living embodiment of magic. Basically it means I’m immortal.”
Arthur’s mouth dropped. “Immortal? As in you’ve been alive for a thousand years?”
“About fifteen hundred. But yes.”
“You wouldn’t say that if you’d lived those years with me.”
Arthur shook his head. “But why are you immortal?”
“Because I had to wait for you, you clotpole. Before you died, the dragon told me you’d rise again when you were needed, so I waited. I’ve watched nations rise and fall without you, which makes me curious. Why are you here, now?”
Just then, Lancelot approached from the back. “Hey, what’s going on?”
Gwen turned to him. “Lancelot! Oh my goodness, it’s you!”
Lance’s eyebrow rose. “Of course it’s me. But how did you know my full name? I don’t tell anyone that.”
“Oh, well, it was just a guess. But we’d like you to meet our friend, Merlin.”
“Both of you know him? But I thought you didn’t know each other before Arthur started work here.”
Arthur stepped in. “We didn’t, but we both met him at different times.” That was the truth, at least.
“Oh, that explains it. Well, any friend of you two is likely to be a friend of mine.” He held out his hand to Merlin, who took it. All three watched Lancelot as the short trance came upon him. When he came out of it, he smiled. “Merlin, so good to see you again!”
“Lancelot, my friend, you have no idea.”
Lance chuckled. “So, what did I miss?”
“I was just explaining to Arthur how I’m immortal and have been waiting for him to return for fifteen hundred years.”
“Is it because of your magic?”
“You got it quicker than Arthur did.”
“Gee, thanks, Merlin,” Arthur replied.
The four chuckled. Just then, Gwen noticed the line that had formed behind Merlin. “I hate to interrupt our reunion, but we have jobs to do.” She frowned. “Merlin, can you stay here for the time being? There’s so much to catch up on. We can talk as business dies down.”
“Of course! Now that I’ve found you three, there’s nowhere I’d rather be.”
“Great,” she replied. “Just sit anywhere. Make yourself comfortable.”
“Yes, ma’am.” And with that, he turned away to find a place to sit.
Gwen turned back to Arthur and Lance. “Back to work, for now.”
The three got busy serving the irate customers who had lined up behind Merlin. When they got to the last customer, all three started in surprise. They recognized a man who was one of their regulars as Leon. “Merlin,” Arthur called over to the warlock.
Merlin looked up. When he saw Leon, he got up and walked over. He introduced himself to Leon, who took this stranger in stride. When they shook hands, he fell into the trance like the rest had. “Merlin!” he exclaimed. He then looked around to see Arthur, Gwen, and Lance. They greeted him with fondness and had a short chat. Merlin invited him to sit at his table so he could explain things without holding anyone else up.
By the end of the day, Merlin had also introduced himself to Gwaine, Percival, Freya, and Elyan, whom Gwen had called. They made plans to meet again the following day, when the shop closed early.
