Author's Notes: This is very much autobiographical.
Morgana lay in bed listening to the wind blowing gently outside. If only all her nights of insomnia were like this. Usually she just lay there listening to the sounds of the house settling for the night or the air conditioner blowing. But today had brought serious thunderstorms, so this breeze was a reminder of the terror gone past.
She knew it was a dumb idea to look at her alarm clock. Everything she’d read about insomnia said to not look at one’s alarm clock. But it was 12:58. Two hours. Two hours since they’d kissed goodnight and turned off the light. Not good. She was sure to be a zombie tomorrow unless she got to sleep in until noon. Fat chance of that.
She rolled over again to look at Merlin. It was so unfair how he could fall asleep so quickly. He had to get up early for work, but he seemed to be able to survive well on six hours of sleep, while she needed nine. Oh well, at least she didn’t have to work so she could sleep in if necessary.
After another interminable time of tossing and turning, Morgana got up. She didn’t look at her clock this time, but headed down the stairs to the kitchen, where they kept their medicine cabinet. When she found her sleeping pills, took one out, and popped it into her mouth. She drank some water to wash it down and headed back up to her torture chamber to try to sleep. If only she hadn’t taken that nap earlier then she’d probably have dropped off a lot sooner.
