Merlin looked up to see one of Cenred’s men coming at his father and screamed in rage, putting magic behind it. Balinor looked at Merlin and said, “It looks like you’ve got your father’s talent.”
Merlin smiled back and Balinor jumped back into the fight with Arthur. After the fight ended in their favor, they packed up their belongings and headed to Camelot. Balinor was able to stop the rampaging dragon. He sent him to live far from Camelot.
In return for his deeds, King Uther offered Balinor plenty of gold and free passage to a country of his choice, just not Camelot. Balinor turned down the gold and said he’d go to Essetir. Merlin begged to accompany him, promising to return. Uther agreed, and father and son were soon on their way.
They talked of many things while they were on the road to Ealdor. Balinor was very curious about Merlin’s life before and after he’d gone to Camelot. Merlin told him story after story of how he’d saved Arthur’s life time and again, sparing no details. It was great entertainment for both men, and it made the miles disappear.
Sooner than they’d thought, they arrived at Ealdor. Balinor felt nervous to see Hunith again, claiming she wouldn’t recognize him now. But Merlin persisted, and led him to Hunith’s door. Merlin knocked and they waited for Hunith to answer.
When the door opened, she only saw Merlin, and threw her arms around him. Balinor cleared his throat, and Hunith glanced over at him. “Merlin, who is this you’ve . . ?” A strange look came over her face, and her voice trembled as she said, “Bal?”
“Yes, my love, it’s me.” Hunith said no more as Balinor opened his arms and she crashed into them.
Merlin stood back from them, tears in his eyes. It was all he could have wanted, all he could have hoped for. At last he’d made his family complete.
