“Did you enjoy yourself last night?”
“Er—yeah,” Merlin answers, scratching the back of his neck as he takes a sip of his morning tea. “You?”
Arthur shrugs. “It was fine; just watched telly. I’m much more interested in hearing about yours, though.”
“How come?” asks Merlin, swallowing hard.
“Because you went out,” Arthur replies evenly, “and now you’re walking with a limp.”
Merlin’s jaw clenches. “Well then,” he says shortly. “I guess you already know how it went.”
“Maybe I want to hear details.”
“Maybe you’re not going to get them.”
“Why not?”
“Because who I sleep with is none of your business,” Merlin says squarely. “Why would it be?”
The question hangs in the air between them for a moment, Arthur watching Merlin carefully and Merlin determinedly watching him right back. When it gets to be too much, he downs the rest of his tea, not caring how much it burns, and returns to his room without another word.
