Arthur watched in fascination as Gwaine drank ale after ale. All but one knight had dropped out of the drinking contest; the rest were slumped on various positions on the floor or their table. The prince turned to Merlin, who had stayed sober as well. “It’s eerie how much that man can put away.”
“Isn’t it?” Merlin said with some pride.
“You knew this would happen, didn’t you?”
“Of course. Tell me you don’t remember the first time he came to Camelot? How much did he and his ‘friends’ drink?”
Just then, the last remaining knight belched and promptly fell off his chair. Gwaine whooped and set down his last tankard. “I thought he’d never pass out.”
Arthur glared at him. “Now how are all of my men going to get home?”
Gwaine grinned back. “Maybe you should just pay for beds here.”
“Fine, but you and Merlin are helping me drag them all to their rooms.”
“Me?” Merlin yelped, “What did I do?”
“You dragged me to this disturbing den of debauchery. Now, let’s do this. I’m going to take this out of their pay.” Arthur nodded at the innkeeper, who immediately left to ready the rooms.
Arthur hauled the nearest knight to his feet and supported him down the hall where the innkeeper had disappeared. Merlin helped Gwaine, who wasn’t the steadiest himself, pick up another knight. Soon all the drunken knights were wither in beds or pallets on the floor. Arthur paid the innkeeper and the three friends were on their way.
“Gwaine, I don’t want you to do this again. Consider that an order,” Arthur said.
“Yes sire,” Gwaine replied with a wobbly salute.
Arthur rolled his eyes. “Merlin, get him to bed then come attend me.”
“Yes, sire.” Merlin grinned. “You had to admit that was fun.”
“It was something. But you were right, I needed the distraction.”
“I knew it!”
“Shut up, Merlin.”
“Shutting up, sire.”
