Arthur had just gotten home and relaxed on the sofa when the flat’s door opened again. In came his flatmate, Merlin, holding something black. “What have you got there?” he asked.
At his words, the something black moved in Merlin’s arms. Two golden eyes stared at Arthur. Oh. “It’s a cat. I found him wandering around outside the building,” Merlin replied.
“You brought a cat into a building that doesn’t allow pets? And a black cat at that.”
“He’s undernourished and needs some TLC. And there’s nothing wrong with black cats. Their bad reputation is completely unfounded.”
Arthur rolled his eyes. “Fine. Feed him up then take him to a shelter. Just don’t get us caught or we could be kicked out of the building.”
“Thank you, Arthur. I really appreciate this!”
“You can show your appreciation by cleaning the loo for a month.”
“Sure.”
And that’s how Arthur knew Merlin was serious about taking care of the cat—Merlin hated cleaning the loo. Still, Arthur had nothing against cats in general, and as long as Merlin was careful, it would be nice to have a pet around the place. “Here, let me take him. You’ll need to go buy some cat supplies, and be quick. Who knows when the little guy may have to ‘go’?”
“Oh, right. Here.” Merlin walked over and handed the cat to Arthur. The furball made himself comfortable in Arthur’s arms, purring as Arthur rubbed his back. “I’ll be back soon.” And with that, Merlin left.
Arthur stared down at the cat in his arms. He’d always liked cats, and here one was in his lap. He settled deeper into the sofa, getting more comfortable. He hoped Merlin would remember to get everything. It wouldn’t do to leave the little guy wanting.
