Merlin opened the front door to his home only to be blasted by a wall of sound. The stereo was playing The Cure again, and Ellie was wailing at the top of her lungs. He waved at Morgana to get her attention and she jumped up to turn down the stereo. “Thank you,” Merlin said, “it was so noisy in here.”
“Was?” Morgana replied. Ellie continued to wail in her arms.
“Here, let me take her.” Merlin walked over to Morgana and took Ellie in his arms. He Held her close and rocked her. She stopped wailing long enough to look up at him and smile. “There, that’s better, isn’t it?”
Morgana put her hands on her hips. “How on earth did you do that? She’s been like this most of the day. I think she’s started teething.”
“Oh, that’s just wonderful.” He poked a finger in Ellie’s mouth, and sure enough, there were two hard ridges in the middle of her bottom jaw. “Yup, I can feel two teeth.”
“That explains everything.”
“Why don’t you go out and get the baby gum gel? I’ll stay here with Ellie.”
“Oh thank you. I’ll just get my purse. Good luck!” Ellie began wailing again, but more slowly this time. Merlin rubbed his finger over her swollen gums.
“Thanks. Enjoy your time out.”
Morgana left. Merlin sat down in the rocking chair, still rubbing Ellie’s gums. He began rocking and Ellie quieted somewhat. Soon she closed her eyes and began breathing slowly. He took his finger out of her mouth and held her close. Who knew how long the peace would last? But he would be glad for it.
