Merlin looked up to see Morgana staring at him from across the lunch table. It had been about a week since she’d asked him out, and he still hadn’t given her a time for them to go out. She’d been constantly around him, gently reminding him of the date, so why hadn’t he set one yet? It was hard to remember anything when her jade eyes were trained on him like this.
Suddenly, she reached across the table to grab his hand. “Let’s go for coffee. Today.”
He blinked. “Today?”
“No time like the present. Plus I’m going to need coffee to get me through all this homework I’ve been set already.”
He couldn’t think of a single reason why today wouldn’t work. Yes, there was the homework, but she had a point. Coffee would help. “Okay.”
“Okay! After stalking you for a week, you finally say okay. It’s a miracle.” She laughed.
It was hard not to smile when she laughed like that. “Yeah, it’s a great idea. You had me there at coffee.”
They met at the front entrance of the school after classes ended. The closest Starbucks was only a few streets’ walk. It took no time at all, especially after Morgana reached out and took his hand. His euphoria got him through the walk and into the coffee shop, where he inhaled the rich aromas and sighed. “It’s heaven, isn’t it?”
Morgana smiled. “It sure is. Now let’s get some of that sweet nectar and plow through some of our homework.”
Merlin came down at the word “homework,” but she was still holding his hand, which made it all right. Soon they had cups in hand and looked for a table. They found one near a window and settled in.
Sipping their drink, they talked about the school day, their families and their hobbies. Once the drinks were gone, they dug their books out of their bags and began working together and the homework they had in common. Once they ran out of that, they looked up to see the light dimming outside. “I guess it’s time for us to go home,” Merlin said.
“I guess so,” Morgana replied.
Merlin took her hand. “Let’s do this again, okay? Same time next week?”
“I’d like that.” She pressed her lips to his cheek. “Thanks for a wonderful time.”
“You’re absolutely welcome.”
They walked back to the school, hand-in-hand, laughing and talking about anything and everything.
