Merlin was just sitting down to Christmas breakfast with his mum when there was a knock at the door. He hurried over to answer it, smoothing his hair on the way. He opened it to find Morgana standing there, a wrapped box in her hands. “Morgana,” he said, “what are you doing here?”

“I wanted to give you your present,” she replied, holding out the box.

At that moment, Merlin’s mum, Hunith, appeared behind him. “Morgana, dear, come in out of the cold.”

Merlin widened the door opening and Morgana stepped inside. “Thank you, Mrs. Emrys.” Merlin closed the door behind her.

“You’re welcome. We were just sitting down to breakfast. Would you like to join us?”

“I’d love to, thanks.”

Merlin pointed upward to the little plant hanging above the entrance to the kitchen. Morgana looked up and said, “Oh.” She stood on her tiptoes and pressed her lips to Merlin’s briefly then broke away. He smiled at her and took her hand to lead her to the dining area.

Hunith quickly sat another place and Morgana sat, surveying the table in front of her. There was a bow of strawberries, another of whipped cream, a plate of waffles, and one of sausages.

“Here’s how it works,” Merlin started. “First you pick a waffle then you pour strawberries on top. After that, you top it with whipped cream.”

“Mm, that sounds so good,” Morgana said.

“Go ahead,” Hunith told her. “Guests go first.”

“Thank you.” Morgana decorated her waffle as described then waited for the others to follow suit. Soon they were all enjoying the delicious breakfast.

As they finished, Morgana nodded at the present Merlin had sat next to him. “Open it,” she prompted.

Merlin reached for the box and tore into the wrapping. He found a box from a posh department store and opened it to find a red piece of fabric. He pulled it out to find a soft scarf.

“I noticed that yours was pretty raggedy,” Morgana said, reaching out to touch the scarf. “I hope you like this one.”

“Thank you, Morgana. I love it.” He leaned forward to give her a quick kiss.

Hunith beamed. “I told you it was time for a new one.”

Merlin wound the scarf around his neck. “Feels pretty good.”

“Will you join us for the rest of the day, dear?” Hunith asked Morgana.

Morgana looked at her watch. “I really should get going. My father doesn’t even know I snuck out.”

Merlin’s mouth fell open. “You snuck out?”

“Well, he didn’t exactly forbid me from coming, but I should be getting back soon.” Morgana stood.

Merlin and Hunith stood with her. “Thanks for coming,” Merlin said then reached out to hug her.

“Thanks for breakfast,” Morgana told Hunith.

“You’re welcome here anytime,” Hunith replied.

She and Merlin walked Morgana to the door, where they embraced again. “I miss you already,” Merlin said.

“Me too,” Morgana said, before stepping out into the cold again.
