Merlin jumped over the sofa then settled down on it not too far from Arthur. “So, what are your goals for the new year?” he asked.
Arthur glared at Merlin. Merlin darn well knew that Arthur didn’t set goals at the turn of the New Year, but here he was, asking him anyway. “Merlin, I set goals throughout the year, not at the beginning, remember?”
Merlin’s face fell. “Oh yeah. Well, I might as well tell you mine.”
“I want to get in shape, raise my grades, and ask your sister out.”
Arthur hid his face in his hands. This was typical stuff people always told themselves they wanted. They made their goals too generic and thus planned to fail. “Merlin, your goals are too generic. If you really want to accomplish all of those, you need a plan. Wait, ask out my sister?”
“Yeah, she’s so hot.”
“I guess so. But seriously, you need a plan if you want to do all of that.”
“Can you help me, Arthur?”
Arthur sighed. “Sure, why not. First, get paper and something to write with.”
They spent the next half hour or so going over Merlin’s goals and making an outline for success for each of them. At the end, Merlin looked down at his papers. “I think I can really do this. Thank you, Arthur!”
“You’re welcome, Merlin. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll work on my goals now.”
“I thought you didn’t make goals for the New Year?”
“Well, let’s just say you inspired me this year.”
Merlin just grinned.
