Merlin stared down at his car. It had lasted him for so many years, maybe . . . but no, it was time. It had gradually become run down over the past few years and now the repair bill was worth more than the value of the car. It was time for a replacement.
He took out his phone from his pocket and called Morgana. “Hi love. Bad news.” He went on to explain the situation to her. “The shop has offered to buy the car for a little less that it’s worth, but that would still make a down payment on a new car. What do you think?”
Morgana sighed. “I suppose. We do need a second car and this one is on its last legs. Sell it to the shop and I’ll come by to pick you up.”
“Thanks, love. See you in a few minutes.” He turned to find the repairman who’d talked to him, and together agreed to a fair price. By the time Morgana showed up, he had a check in his pocket and one less car to his name.
Morgana covered his hand with hers as she pulled away from the shop. “I know it’s hard. That car has been with us a long time. It’s always managed to get us where we need to go. But look at it this way—now we can start a relationship with a new car.”
“I guess so.” Merlin perked up a bit. Can we go shopping this weekend?”
“Of course,” Morgana agreed. “Now we just need to work out who’s going to drive whom to work and all that.”
Merlin laughed, and just like that he was back to himself. Sure they’d lost a car, but now they had a chance to start over with a new one. The future looked shiny after all.
