“I just want a nice, easy life. What’s wrong with that?” Merlin asked the universe as he once again dragged Arthur’s unconscious self back to Camelot.
They had been out hunting with a group of knights and had gotten separated, of course. That’s when a group of mercenaries and their sorcerer leader had attacked. Of course Arthur fought the mercenaries while Merlin worked behind the scenes to trip them up and/or drop tree branches on their heads. Arthur had nearly gotten them all when the sorcerer pronounced a spell that knocked him unconscious. That’s when Merlin really got to work.
With a gesture, he’d blown the remaining merc into a tree. The sorcerer’s eyes had widened when he saw who he’d be dealing with. They’d battled it out for a while before Merlin had gotten tired of the whole mess and pushed the man over a ledge. He was very dead, fortunately.
Now all Merlin had to do was get Arthur back to Camelot, which was no easy feat. He could have made him float in midair, but at any time they could come across someone searching for them, which is what eventually happened. Merlin was relieved
Still, though, as he lay in bed that night, he pondered the strange twist of fate that had brought him to Camelot and set him on this path to saving Arthur’s life every week or so. Yes, life was simpler in Ealdor, but he simply didn’t fit in there anymore. It would have been easy, true, but boring. Life here was rich, full, even if it was a lot of work. He was glad he’d come to Camelot after all.
