Merlin woke, sensing that something was off. Beside him, Morgana was trembling. He rolled over and put his hands on her arms. “Morgana, you’re shivering. What’s the matter?”
“I had a terrible dream,” she replied.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“Not really, but I guess I should.”
He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. “Go ahead.”
“I dreamed that the baby was born dead and I cried and cried, but you just got angry and left me. I was all alone with our dead child. No one came to help me.” Tears leaked from her eyes.
Merlin pulled her closer. “Oh, my love, I would never do that. You know that, don’t you?”
“Yes, but in the dream you just didn’t care. It felt so real.”
He kissed her forehead. “I would never, ever leave you like that. I love you and our child too much.” He caressed her swollen abdomen. “Do you believe me now?”
“Yes.” She sighed then yawned.
“Ready to go back to sleep?” She nodded. “Good. I’ll hold you.”
And he held her, staying awake until she fell asleep again. Not much later, he dropped off again.
