Merlin sat cross legged on the edge of the bed wearing nothing but a navy colored sheet on his lower half, and a severe case of bedhead on top. Through sleepy eyes he watched as Arthur crossed back and forth over and over again in front of him, gathering all the necessities for his business trip.
"How long will you be gone again?" Merlin asked, his voice heavy with sleep
Arthur tucked his shirt neatly into the suitcase with the others and ran a hand through Merlin's hair.
"Only a week. And when I come home, we'll celebrate; just the two of us."
When Arthur had found out that he had be away on business over he and Merlin's anniversary he had been crushed. Arthur was determined to make their belated first anniversary an extravagant event. And, if there was anything a Pendragon knew how to do, it was to keep promises.
"Promise?" Merlin asked, fluttering his eyelashes teasingly
Arthur smiled as he leaned down to place a kiss on Merlin's forehead.
With that, the blond turned to walk to their bathroom to grab the toiletries he would need and dropped the final bag into his suitcase, closing the lid with a satisfied smile.
"Done. I should go downstairs, my taxi will be here any minute."
As Arthur finished speaking, his eyes looked at Merlin, who had lowered his head to stare at his hands.
"Arthur, will you really come home?"
Arthur lifted his suitcase from the bed, and set it on the floor, so he could be as close to Merlin as possible.
"Merlin, what's got you feeling this way? You're worrying me."
Merlin raised his head and offered his partner his best reassuring smile.
"You're not only the greatest thing to happen to me, but this past year, I've never felt more wonderful for as long as I've lived. I don't want anything to change that."
Arthur felt, not for the first time since finding out that he had to leave town, like climbing back into bed and never leaving his comfortable spot under the covers for the next few days.
"Give me your hand." Arthur instructed
Arthur grabbed Merlin's hand from its spot where it had been resting on his leg. Raising it to his face, he pressed a simple kiss to Merlin's palm, before closing his hand into a tight fist.
"When I'm gone and you start to miss me, you can open this hand, press it to your heart, and know that I'm always right there with you. And when I come home, I'll give you the rest of those kisses."
"Is that a promise?" Merlin smiled
Arthur dropped a kiss onto the fist that was currently guarding his kiss.
"Of course it is."
