Neither of them saw it coming, but that is the nature of accidents.
One minute they were laughing as they sped along in the early morning sunshine, Arthur in the lead as always because he was so damn competitive.
The next minute he heard a crash, and he wheeled around to see Merlin on the ground, splayed out next to his bike. The wheels of the bike were still spinning, but Merlin was eerily still.
“Nonononononono” Arthur’s brain sang, even as he rode the couple of dozen yards to his husband and threw his own bike to the side as he knelt by next to Merlin.
Merlin was as white as chalk and his eyes were closed, and he didn’t respond when Arthur called his name. Feeling the panic rising in his chest, Arthur gently tapped Merlin’s face, saying, “C’mon, wake up. Wake up!”
It seemed like it took forever, but finally Merlin opened his eyes. He started to struggle, but Arthur put a hand on his chest and ordered, “Just stay still for a minute.”
By that time other bikers had stopped, and Arthur asked one of them to call 911 for him. Merlin seemed confused, but as near as Arthur could tell he was unhurt.
The distance between a tragedy and a near-tragedy feels like only a few inches, and Arthur felt a rush of gratitude.
He didn’t see how he could survive without Merlin, and he vowed to let Merlin know that every single day.
