Merlin went to knock on the door of the royal chambers. He thought for a moment and decided not to. Arthur, and now Gwen, might still be asleep. The wedding feast had gone well into the night.
He opened the door as quietly as he could and sat the breakfast tray on the table. He spied Arthur’s and Gwen’s clothes on the floor and bent to pick them up. For Arthur, this was nothing unusual, but for Gwen, well, he was puzzled. He knew Gwen was tidier than this.
"He backed up and hit the bedside table. There was movement behind the bed’s drapes and Arthur suddenly appeared between them. “Merlin! What are you doing?” he whispered.
“The usual morning cleanup,” Merlin replied.
“I, uh, we don’t need you this morning.”
“Are you sure? Because this place is a mess.”
“Merlin, I’m asking you to please . . . get out.”
“But I haven’t finished yet.”
Arthur sighed. “It’s all right, Merlin, we’ll be fine. Just go.”
“All right. Breakfast is on the table.”
Arthur nodded and made shooing motions with his hands. Merlin crossed to the door, opened it, and left. As he walked away, he hear the lock engage on the door. Why would Arthur want to . . . ?
Oh my goodness. Merlin knew suddenly that he really was the biggest idiot in the world. Of course Arthur and Gwen wanted to be alone this morning. They could be in the middle of . . . ooh, he didn’t want to think about that. He shuddered and walked quickly away. He needed to work out a system with the King and Queen that if they wanted to be intimate, they’d leave him a sign. Like a locked door. Or something. He just didn't want to make this mistake again.
