Morgana sighed as she sat down to dinner. Merlin looked at her, a question in his eyes, but she waved him off. Now he was even more curious as to what was bothering her, but he remained silent for now.
After dinner, they washed the dishes together. Merlin thought that now would be the perfect time to ask what was going on. “Are you feeling all right, love?”
“I’m fine,” Morgana replied.
“I’ve known you too long to let you get away with that excuse. What’s going on?”
“I don’t really want to talk about it.”
Merlin stopped drying the pan he was holding and sat it down. He took her wet hand and said, “Now I know something’s bothering you. You won’t even look at me.”
Morgana finally looked at him. “I’m sorry.”
“What do you have to be sorry for?”
“I started my period today.”
“Oh. Oh.” Merlin threw his arms around his wife. She slowly raised hers to wrap around him and lowered her head to his shoulder. Soon she was shaking with tears. “I’m so so sorry, love. But you shouldn’t blame yourself.”
“But I so wanted to be carrying your baby by now.”
“I know, I know. But it’s still not your fault. This process can take a few months, especially the first time.”
Morgana kept crying. Merlin held her tight. “Please don’t blame yourself.” He pulled back but took her hands. “Here, you go sit on the sofa. Turn on some music if you like. I’ll finish the dishes and get us both glasses of wine. We can do whatever you like tonight. Or do nothing at all, if that’s what you’d like. I’m completely open.”
Morgana threw her arms around him again. “Thank you.” She kissed his cheek and wiped her eyes.
Before he let her go, he gave her a quick peck on the lips. Once she’d left the room, he heard soft music coming from the living room. He smiled and began to finish the dishes. He looked forward to his evening with her, further comforting them both.
