Music floated from the dining hall, and the closer Merlin got, the louder it became. Uther had really gone all out for Arthur’s birthday this year. He’d hired the best musical trio in the kingdom, and there was to be dancing after the banquet.
Merlin would have loved to dance, but he was serving at the banquet. And even if he wasn’t, servants weren’t permitted to dance; just the nobles. He frowned and made his way inside the hall with his jug of wine.
On his way back to the kitchen, Merlin bumped into Gwen, who was in the corridor, swaying to the music. “I’m so sorry, Gwen, are you all right?”
Gwen brushed herself off. “I’m fine, Merlin. I really should get back to my duties.”
“Now wait a minute. You were dancing to the music, weren’t you?”
“Shh! Don’t say that too loudly.”
“Gwen, no one else is out here. They’re all busy. Besides, I have a few minutes before they expect me back.” He extended his hand. “Would you like to dance with me?”
Gwen’s eyes lit up. “Yes! I mean, just for a few minutes is all right.”
“Great!”
Merlin put both hands to her waist and she looped hers around his neck. They both began to move to the music, Merlin being careful to not step on her toes. Around and around they went, until they heard someone in the corridor. They quickly stepped apart as another servant made his way to the dining hall.
“Thanks for dancing with me,” Merlin said.
“It was a pleasure,” Gwen replied. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. Have a nice night.”
“You too, Merlin.” She stretched up and kissed his cheek then turned and walked toward the dining hall.
If Merlin walked with a little pep in his step the rest of the night, no one noticed but him.
