Uther lifted the goblet to his lips, listening with one ear to Lord Boltherine as he blathered on about his latest bout with gout. “And when Gaius said I should avoid my favorite meal, well, I knew he was the wrong person to see. And really, treating it with a flower? How ridiculous? My father’s healer had a treatment of roasted fat goose and it always worked for him.”
Uther sighed into his goblet, letting his attention drift to the side where his son and his manservant were hissing at each other. He couldn’t hear what they were arguing about but he didn’t need to. He found himself idly wondering if they really thought the rest of the castle had no idea how they felt for each other or if it was just the two of them that were really so oblivious.
Boltherine coughed hard into Uther’s ear, dragging his attention firmly back to the visiting lord and his complaints. He couldn’t wait until the pompous twit left for his estates. He was actually managing to annoy him more than Arthur’s servant.
