"Good morning." Gwen pulled the drapes apart, letting morning sun flood Morgana's chamber. "There's been such a to-do in the castle tonight! Lord Clamedoc has fallen grievously ill. Gaius says that the exact nature of his malady is a mystery, but for a short while, he almost feared for the lord's life!"
Morgana sat up. "That sounds quite frightful. Let's hope it's not contagious."
"Gaius seems to think it's not."
"Good." Morgana pushed to the side of her bed and stood up, accepting the robe that Gwen handed her.
"And to think that Clamedoc sat next to you at high table last evening, and that you two were conversing all through the feast," Gwen continued, a little breathlessly. "What did you talk about?"
"Oh, the usual, with men like him. Endless bragging on his part about his wealth, his castle and lands, his hunting and fighting prowess. Quite obnoxious. I hardly got a word in. Nor did I want to."
"He was trying to impress you, then. Do you think he intended to ask Uther for your hand?"
"I suppose so, but we'll never know. He shall probably have to return to his estate for a long period of recuperation."
"Yes, that was Gaius' suggestion," Gwen replied. "Plans are being made for his departure as soon as he's able to travel."
"I wish him a full recovery," Morgana said, absentmindedly adjusting the delicate flowers in the small vase on the window-sill. Her nosegay from last evening's May day celebration still looked fresh and dewy. But some of the flowers had to have wilted, Gwen noticed, because there were fewer stems left now than when Morgana first received the posy.
Moving to the door, Gwen turned her thoughts to practical matters. "I'll go fetch your breakfast, milady," she said.
With an enigmatic smile, Morgana leaned closer to her flowers, enjoying the sight and smell of the delicate white bells. "Poisonous, pretty, and sweetly scented. I do not think there is any aspect of lilies-of-the-valley that do not please me," she murmured to the empty room.
