The sun was setting as Arthur and Gwen arrived home. They had traveled as fast as they could, stopping only to eat and rest the horses.
Arthur helped Gwen out of the saddle and set her on her feet. He held on to her for a few moments longer. They were about to face his father and he wanted to postpone it for as long as he could.
The groom came out to collect the horses as they stood there trying to stop time.
"Arthur, we have to face him." Gwen pushed his hands away. "Sooner rather than later."
"I know. I just don't want to." He pulled her into his arms and leaned his forehead on hers.
Gwen sighed. "I don't either but we have no choice. Both of our fathers will want to see us."
"It's not your father that I'm worried about. It's mine." Arthur let go of her and looked around. "Where's Merlin? He should be here to meet us."
"Maybe he's doing something and didnt hear us arrive." Gwen looked around.
"Merlin actually working? Don't be ridiculous." Arthur shook his head. "Never! Something is wrong. We need to go to Gaius' cottage before we face my father. Gaius will know what's going on and where Merlin is off to."
Gwen nodded. "Maybe, we should know what we will be facing before we go in."
Arthur took her hand. "Come on. It's starting to get dark."
Arthur led her down a path that circled the stables and took them down to a few small cottages. They stopped in and knocked at the door of the first cottage.
Merlin opened the door. "Finally! Get in." He moved aside to let them pass.
"Why aren't you at the house?" Arthur asked him.
"Your father sacked me." Merlin motioned for them to sit down. "He was angry and I deserved it."
"No, you didn't." Arthur frowned. "You're rehired as of this moment. What are we about to walk into?"
"Let's see…" Merlin took a breath. "Gaius has been up at the house most of the day trying to talk your father around on various things. Your marriage. My sacking. Morgana."
"What is wrong with Morgana?" Gwen asked.
"She's locked herself in her room and wont speak to anyone, especially her father." Merlin told her.
"You should go to her. Before you say she wont open the door, I know you can get in there, locked door or not." Arthur gave him a knowing look. "Locked doors have never been a problem for you before."
Merlin sighed. "I'm the reason she locked the door."
Arthur started to laugh but Gwen glared at him.
Gaius came through the door and frowned when he saw Arthur and Gwen. "He knows you're here. You better get to the house."
Arthur reached out and took Gwens hand. "Ready?"
"No, but let's go anyway." Gwen gripped Arthur's hand tightly.
