While Merlin and Morgana’s friends were congratulating them, one of the most popular girls in the school came up behind the couple. “It won’t work out. He’s just her new flavor of the month.”
“Are you kidding me?” Gwen said, stepping out of the crowd.
Morgana put a hand on Gwen’s shoulder. “Thanks, Gwen. But we have this.”
Merlin and Morgana stepped out of the group, who lined up behind them. “You don’t know much, do you?” Morgana told the girl.
“I know you’ve dumped guys after only a few weeks together,” the girl fired back.
“Did you ever consider that maybe they dumped me? My father is quite intimidating.”
“That’s not what I heard.”
“You heard wrong. And Merlin and I are together for the long haul.”
The girl crossed her arms. “Him? What could you possibly see in him?”
“Why you—“ Morgana started. Merlin squeezed her hand and stepped forward a little.
“You wouldn’t know true love if it reached out and smacked you across the face. Because that’s what it is. And as long as both of us know that, your opinion doesn’t matter,” he said. Then he turned himself and Morgana around and they began walking away, their friends following. No one paid any more attention to the girl.
The girl stood there, mouth hanging open. The crowd surged around and past her as they walked to class. Her friends came and urged her forward, and she went with them.
Merlin and Morgana kept holding hands until they had to part for their different classes. “Did you mean it?” Morgana asked him. “This is true love for you?”
“I meant every word.”
She jumped up, arms encircling his neck and pulling his lips down to meet hers. It was a quick kiss, so they wouldn’t be caught, but it meant a lot to him.
They parted, both glowing in their new-found revelation. Nothing could part them now.
