Gaius had just settled down for the night with his book when he heard thunderous footsteps coming towards his door. He rolled his eyes good-naturedly. Boys, even powerful sorcerer boys, were so dramatic these days.
Sure enough, his ward burst in through the door a moment later.
“Gaius!” Merlin screamed, making Gaius wince at the loudness of his voice.
“I am right here, Merlin, there is no need to shout at this late hour,” Gaius replied, surrendering to his fate and sitting up again.
“You must come quick, Gaius, there is something wrong with Aithusa,” Merlin said, sounding panicked. Gaius looked at the open door warily, and Merlin thankfully noticed before he needed to be reminded, and went to lock the door. Gaius nodded in approval.
“I think she has a rash,” Merlin continued. “It is on her face around her nose, I don’t know how she got it. What can we do? Do you have any medicine for rashes on dragons?”
Gaius took in Merlin’s ruffled appearance, and he couldn’t help but chuckle.
“You sound like every new parent, Merlin,” he said. “Are you sure they’re not just freckles?”
Merlin paused, looking like the idea never crossed his mind.
“Did you ask her if she is hurt, or even itchy?” Gaius tried again.
“I did, she said she never noticed anything,” Merlin replied. “I- I was about to call Kilgarrah but I didn’t want to take Aithusa out of the cave to go meet him.”
“Well I’m glad you didn’t bring the great dragon down upon us just because your pet has a few freckles Merlin,” Gaius teased. Merlin was looking more and more chastised, so Gaius clapped him on the back. “Don’t worry, Merlin, I am sure she is alright. Keep an eye on the freckles for a few days anyway.”
Thankfully Gaius’s inference came true and no harm was brought upon Aithusa. But just as Merlin was about to go out again on his next adventure with Arthur, Gaius couldn’t help comment, “Now that you have a ward of your own and you know how I feel every time you or the young Prince seem to find yourselves injured, I hope you will take extra care of yourselves.”
