Morgana was about six months along when it kicked in. The nesting instinct. She just woke up one morning, sat down to breakfast with Merlin, and started talking.
“Today I want to go paint shopping and paint the nursery. Then I want to assemble the crib and changing table. After those are done, I’d like to go . . .”
“Hang on a minute,” Merlin interrupted. Isn’t all that a bit ambitious?”
“Ambitious? Merlin, we have about three months before the baby is born and we’ve hardly done anything! Besides, I’m feeling great today and feel like I could accomplish a lot.”
“All right, as long as you’re up for all that, we can do it.”
“Great!” Morgana stood. “Let’s get going.”
“Wait, can’t I at least finish breakfast first?”
Merlin quickly finished his pancakes while Morgana got ready to go. When he was done, he grabbed his wallet and keys and they went out to the car. Their first stop was the paint store, where they debated on colors. Morgana didn’t want the cliché blue or pink, even though they didn’t know the gender. They decided on a light purple. After paint, they shopped for bedding to match the paint color, and picked up a rocking chair to add to the assembly list. They returned home and changed into painting clothes.
“You still feeling good?” Merlin asked her.
“Yeah, I’m ready to do this.”
After lunch, they put on some music and got to work. After they’d painted half the room, Morgana paused. “This is harder than I thought it would be.”
“Painting is hard work. Do you want to take a break?”
“No, I can push through.”
“Okay. But tell me anytime you want to stop.”
She nodded and they got back to work. When it was done, Merlin said, “Why don’t I get that rocking chair put together so you can relax for a few minutes?”
“No, I want to help with the crib,” she replied, sitting on the floor.
“Nope, I’m assembling the rocking chair. You look really uncomfortable.”
Morgana nodded and Merlin began assembling the chair. By the time he was through, she was having a hard time keeping her eyes open. “Here you go, love. Have a seat in that and relax while I put together the crib.”
“Okay.” She sat in the chair and started gently rocking.
Merlin laid out the crib pieces and scanned the directions. When the chair stopped moving, he looked up. Morgana was fast asleep. He smiled and began assembling the crib as quietly as he could. When he was done, he’d wake her up and they could admire it together. But for now, he’d let her sleep.
