"What's gotten into the princess today?" Gwaine muttered, lowering his wooden sword and wiping sweat from his brow. "He's like a bear with a toothache!"
"You know what's bothering him." Lancelot turned to study Arthur berating one of the new guardsmen.
"He's missing his Merlin," Percival grinned.
Gwaine frowned. "Where is Merlin, anyway? He usually sits ringside, supplying Arthur with a little snark and a lot of googly eyes."
"Gaius needed help," Elyan replied. "Must have been important."
"Let's hope it doesn't take long," Leon sighed. "We won't have a moment's peace until Merlin's here."
"Look, peace is approaching," Gwaine exclaimed, pointing. Merlin was hurrying in their direction.
Arthur saw it too. He greeted Merlin with a surly 'what took you so long?' But his posture relaxed, and his mood immediately and visibly improved.
"Merlin saves the day," Lancelot said. "And not for the first time, either."
The other knights turned to him, expecting details, but Lancelot only shrugged. With a gesture, he focused their attention on the new recruits. "Where his knights and squires are, that's where Arthur will be. As long as he also has Merlin by his side, all is always right in the royal world!"
