Merlin sat down at his usual table in the cafeteria. Before long, Gwaine came along and sat next to him. And, by some miracle, Morgana- the hottest girl in school –sat down at the far end of the table.
Merlin tried not to stare, but he could tell he was losing it when Gwaine said to him, “So close and yet so far.”
“Gwaine!” Merlin said in alarm, but Morgana was laughing at something one of her friends had said and hadn’t heard Gwaine.
“You should just ask her out, you know.”
“I—I can’t. She’s just too far above me, you know?”
Gwaine snorted. “Don’t sell yourself short. You’ve got a lot going for you.”
“Your grades. Your intelligence. Your charm and wit. Pick one.”
“Ugh,” Merlin said, folding his arms on the table and resting his head on them.
“Um, hi,” said a musical voice behind him.
Merlin whipped his head up and turned. Morgana was standing there. Morgana was standing there?!
“Hi,” was all he could manage as he gazed up at her.
“I heard you tutor maths. I, um, need a maths tutor,” she said.
“Oh. Yeah I do.”
“Great! Would you tutor me?”
“Yeah, I’d like that.” Gwaine nudged Merlin. “I mean, yes, I will.”
“Thank you so much.” She handed Merlin a piece of paper. “My number. So call me tonight so we can arrange a time and day.”
“You got it.”
“Okay. Bye, Merlin.” She waved and was gone before Merlin could manage to reply.
“W-O-W,” Gwaine said, patting Merlin on the back.
“Yeah, I can hardly believe it myself. Why me though?”
“Don’t you remember what I just said about your grades and charm? Well there you go.”
Gwaine ruffled his hair. “Just don’t forget to call her, okay?”
“I won’t. Believe me.”
“Good. Now finish your lunch or you’ll be hungry the rest of the day.”
“Yes, sir.” Merlin gave him a mock salute and got on with eating. Today was going to be a good day, he could feel it.
