Perfection

“It must be utterly perfect.  No detail left unattended.” 

Merlin peered at his boss over the frame of his glasses.  “Then why am I the one attending to the details for the ‘most important first date’ of your life?”

“Because I have actual business to deal with.”  Arthur shrugged as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

“If you’re this much of an ass on a date solely meant to impress your father, I don’t want to see how you are with someone you actually like.  You could take Elena to a caber toss and she’ll be happy.  She’s that nice.  Much better than you deserve, anyway.” 

“Merlin…”

“Yeah, yeah, ‘shut up’.  Don’t worry, it’ll be perfect.  Your father will be happy and I’ll be there with chocolate cake for Elena when this relationship goes belly-up.  You can get your own cake.  I like her better.”  Merlin didn’t wait for Arthur to respond as he left the office.  He had date plans to make.
