Merlin rang the bell on the intimidating front door. He had no idea who would open the door, but he hoped it would be Morgana. He was already nervous enough that he wouldn’t know what to say to a butler or the like. Did people even have butlers anymore?
Fortunately Morgana did open the door. “Hey, Merlin. All set to go?”
“Yeah! We’re going to have a great time,” he replied
“By the way, where are we going?” Morgana asked as she made her way to a nice car.
Not too flashy, Merlin noted. “I guess I can tell you now. The botanical gardens.”
Morgana’s eyes lit up. “Ooh, I’ve never been there before, but I’ve always wanted to go.”
“Great! It’s one of my favorite places to go. I especially love what they do for Christmas. They wrap everything in lights—it’s called the Garden Glow.”
“That sounds really pretty. We’ll have to go again at Christmastime.”
“So you’re anticipating another date?” Merlin wanted to know.
Morgana took his hand. “I’m anticipating a lot of dates. But let’s get in the car so we can start this one.”
Merlin agreed and they were off. It was a short distance from Merlin’s home and it didn’t take them too long to get there. Morgana was amazed by the displays they had leading into the garden, and she stopped to read all the little signs with the plants’ names.
After they’d gotten their tickets and made it through the main building to the actual garden, Merlin asked, “What do you want to see first? There’s a Chinese garden, a Japanese garden, a rose garden, a tropical garden inside a dome . . . I could go on.”
“I want to see it all, of course,” Morgana replied.
“All right. We’ll start with the tropical garden. It’s the closest.”
Morgana was amazed by the tropical garden, and each successive garden they walked through. Merlin had brought a picnic lunch, so they stopped in the shade of the Chinese garden to eat. Between bites, she raved about everything she’d seen so far. Merlin just smiled, glad he could share something wonderful with her.
When they’d seen everything but the rose garden, Morgana took his hand. “Thank you for bringing me here. I’ve had a wonderful time.”
“You’re welcome. I thought you might enjoy it,” Merlin replied.
“I wasn’t talking about the garden, though it is more beautiful than I’d imagined. I meant I’ve had a wonderful time with you, Merlin.”
Merlin flushed. He knew he’d been lucky to get a date with Morgana, and now she was saying she’d come with him for him. “Thank you.”
She leaned close and kissed his cheek. “I’m so glad you asked me out.”
Merlin’s hand flew to his kissed cheek. “Me too,” was all he could manage.
“Now take me through the roses. They are my favorite flower.”
“Of course.” Still marveling at their joined hands, he led her through to the roses.
