Gwen and Merlin had discovered they didn’t live that far from each other, so they took to walking home from school together. Merlin would talk about how much he missed Morgana and Gwen would try not to talk about how happy she was with Arthur. Not that Merlin discouraged her; she just didn’t want to hurt Merlin anymore.
One day Merlin got a wicked glint in his eye. “What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done?”
“Me? No way. I’m not answering that unless you do,” Gwen replied.
“Okay, I promise to answer the question too. Satisfied?”
“Yes. So, the worst thing I’ve ever done huh? Hmm.”
“Come on, out with it.”
Gwen stopped and put her hands on her hips. “You’ve got to give me some time to think.”
“Oh, that means you’ve done more than one bad thing.”
“Merlin!”
He held up his hands. “All right.”
“Hmm. Oh, I’ve got it. One time Elyan pranked me pretty badly, so I took his football cleats and poured syrup in them. The next time he put them on, his socks stuck to the bottom of the cleats and he couldn’t get them off without leaving the socks in them. He had to wash the cleats. I’ve never laughed so hard.”
“Oh wow, that’s pretty bad. But it’s nothing compared to the worst thing I’ve ever done.”
“And what’s that?”
“I peed in the shower.”
Gwen stopped walking again. “That’s the worst thing you’ve ever done?”
“Yeah, why?”
“Merlin, everyone does that.”
“You’re kidding me.”
“I’m really not.”
Merlin sighed. “How was I supposed to know that? I felt so guilty.”
Gwen put a hand on his shoulder. “I wouldn’t worry about it. If that’s the worst thing you’ve ever done, you’re a better person than most of us.”
“Thanks, Gwen.”
“Don’t worry about it. Now, do you have any more weird questions for me?”
