Morgana stared out the window at the gently falling snow. She was holding the tears in, but just barely.
Another negative pregnancy test. She had failed again.
Merlin entered the room. “Love, why are you standing there in front of the cold window?” He picked up the blanket from the sofa. “Here, take the blanket.”
He started to wrap the blanket around her shoulders but she shrugged him off. “In winter the dark creeps up on you,” she told him.
“Isn’t that a line from a book?”
She turned to him, tears finally streaming down her face. “Yes, but it’s the perfect way to describe winter and the dark, isn’t it?”
“Oh Morgana,” Merlin replied, putting his arms around her. “What’s wrong?”
“Do I have to say it?” She shook with the force of her sobs.
“I’m such an idiot.” He drew her closer. “Another negative test.”
He simply held her for a long while, until she cried herself out. He led her over to the sofa and sat her down. “Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”
“I didn’t want to disappoint you again.”
He took her hands. “Morgana, I’m never disappointed in you. I’m sad, but not disappointed. Give me the chance to be sad with you.”
“But we’ve been trying for two years, and for what? Nothing.”
“So, it’s probably time we see a doctor, don’t you think?”
“Oh, can we?”
“Of course. I’ll find one tomorrow.”
She squeezed his hands. “Thank you.”
They spent a long time just holding each other and talking, until the dark no longer scared her.
