Merlin didn’t remember much when he woke up again. It was becoming a habit that he wasn’t fond of. After all, with all the secrets in his life, magic being top of the list but there were a few more life-shattering ones that he couldn’t let Arthur know about—like ever, he did worry about what had happened.

Last thing he remembered was downing that potion Gaius had given him. Flashes of golden hair and warm lips seemed to hover a bit in his memories, but nothing to tie them to a person.

He did have a suspicion that it wasn’t good, though. The only one with golden hair that he’d cared about was Arthur and he didn’t dare dream of that body under his own, never mind how much he wanted to plunder that sarcastic pair of lips. That way lay madness.

Worse, Gaius didn’t know, either, just said that he’d found Merlin asleep in his bed, none the worse for wear.

Left alone to ponder the meaning of it all, his back still hurting, he was starting to spiral. What had he done? Was Arthur involved? Did Arthur want to be involved? And why did he keep feeling like the ghost of Arthur’s mouth was imprinted on his?
It was a mystery he was determined to solve, or else bury it so deep that it would never come up again.

Confronting Arthur wasn’t a great idea, though. The man could be oblivious at times or, worse, offended by the very idea of a servant, especially Merlin, would want to kiss him. That mouth was destined for nobility and a woman and Merlin was neither.
But the longer he sat there, the more it bothered him. Gaius would probably tell him to leave things alone, that whatever would blow over in the next crisis and if Merlin questioned Arthur about it, he’d only make things worse.

Merlin was never one to leave things alone, though.

So standing in front of Arthur’s chambers, getting ready to knock, knowing it was a terrible idea and doing it anyway, he half-stumbled in when Arthur opened the door unexpectedly.

“What the hell are you doing here? Gaius said you needed at least a day of rest and here you are, being an idiot, again,” Arthur said, pulling him into the room and closing the door. He was frowning, too, shaking his head. “Merlin, do you have a death wish?”

“Nope, just… umm, wanting to see if you were alright,” Merlin mumbled, trying to look innocent when all he wanted to do was ask about last night.

“Merlin, I’m not the one who was hurt and half out of his head yesterday,” Arthur said. He looked Merlin up and down, then stared a second too long at Merlin’s mouth, before clearing his throat.

“At least I’ve got most of my head back on straight. I’m here, right? Just idiotic Merlin.” Merlin gave him a quick, stupid smile, then bit at his lip before he said, “Did I do something I needed a whole head for?”

“Do you have a whole head available? Because yours is filled with air and you speak such ridiculous nonsense all the time,” Arthur replied. It was rubbish, of course, but Arthur kept watching his mouth as Merlin bit his lip harder, worrying it, and then soothed the sting with the tip of his tongue.

Arthur grunted a little, almost as if he couldn’t help it, then his eyes were dark and was watching Merlin with what looking like longing but that was impossible, of course. But he was breathing funny and his hands twitching as if ready to reach for something.

“Arthur?” Merlin murmured. He must have said something last night, something stupid enough that even Arthur noticed.
“Did you mean it? What you said last night?” Arthur replied, stepping a little closer as if unable to help himself.

“I’m…,” Merlin started to say. He didn’t know what the hell he’d said but Arthur certainly did and he was acting oddly about it. Black eyes and worrying his lip as Merlin had done only a moment ago, that gorgeous mouth of Arthur’s wet. Merlin wanted to taste him again.

And then it started to come back to him, the declaration of want, and the warmth of Arthur’s lips on his.

“I… I… do you want to pretend I didn’t?” Merlin was panicking a little, hoping that Arthur wouldn’t be an arse about rejecting him, the shame of it would just about kill him.

For a second, it looked like Arthur was just going to tell him he was an idiot and a cabbage-head for even thinking such a thing.
“No,” Arthur breathed.

But then, impossibly, as insane as it might be for all the nights Merlin had dreamt of such a thing, Arthur pulled him close and pressed his mouth to Merlin’s and gave him a kiss that he’d dreamed of since the moment they’d met.

And it was everything he’d hoped for and more.
