“Well, you’re about 5 centimeters dilated, so you’ve still got about halfway to go,” the midwife told Morgana.
Merlin and Morgana looked at each other. “So how long will it take until she is born?” Morgana asked.
“It depends. Do you know how long your mother labored?”
“No, I don’t. And she passed so I can’t ask her.”
“I’m sorry. But it could be a few minutes or several hours,” the midwife said.
“So what are we going to do while we wait?” Merlin asked.
“Well, you can walk around the hospital, take a warm bath, or watch television. There might be some amusements at the gift shop.”
“Thank you,” Merlin replied, as the midwife took off her gloves and tossed them.
After she left, Merlin turned to Morgana. “So, does any of that appeal to you?”
“A warm bath sounds nice then maybe we could walk around.”
“Okay. Would you like me to get that started for you?”
“Merlin, I’m in labor, I’m not an invalid. Watch telly or go see what the gift shop has to offer,” Morgana replied.
“All right. I guess I’ll go to the gift shop and check out the ’amusements.’”
“Enjoy.” Morgana got out of bed and ambled off toward the bathroom.
Merlin stayed to make sure she got in okay then set off outside the room. He stopped at the nurses’ station to ask where the gift shop was located. He was told to go back toward the entrance. He thanked them and set off. Once there, he wandered around looking at greeting cards, balloons, stuffed animals, snacks, and board games. There among the board games, he found the cutest puzzle that would match Ellie’s room perfectly. He picked it up, grabbed some snacks, and headed back to the room.
Once there, he went to the bathroom to show Morgana the puzzle. “Oh, that’s perfect. DO you think we’ll be able to finish it before she comes?”
“If not, we can finish it after. It’s only two hundred and fifty pieces.”
“Okay,” Morgana said, rising out of the water. “Might as well get started now.”
While Morgana dried and dressed, Merlin broke open the box and poured out the pieces on the bedside table. When they finished it, the puzzle would depict a pair of majestic unicorns.
Morgana sat on the bed and they got started. The edges were easiest to find then then sorted the pieces by color. While they worked, nurses came and went, checking on Morgana’s progress. Afterward, she’d sit up and continue with the puzzle.
When they put the last piece in place, Morgana twitched in pain. “That was a big one.”
“The contractions started again? Do I need to get a nurse?”
“No, I don’t think so—ow!”
“Lie back. I’m going to get a nurse.”
“Okay,” Morgana agreed.
Merlin hurried out to the nurses’ station, where they asked him a few questions. They paged the midwife, and a nurse followed Merlin back to the room where Morgana was writhing in pain. The nurse asked Morgana a few questions. Soon, the midwife appeared and checked Morgana. “Looks like we’re going to have a baby!”
