“Merlin!” Arthur’s bellow rang down the corridor.
“Great, just great,” Merlin muttered as he raced toward Arthur’s chambers. He turned a corner and was suddenly there facing an irritated Arthur.
“You are late,” Arthur told Merlin as he preceded him into the room.
“I’m sorry, sire. I was up all night with Gaius in the village. We worked to save an ill child but lost him just before dawn.”
Arthur’s face softened. “I was unaware of that.” He thought for a moment. “Merlin, go back to bed. Your chores can wait until the afternoon.”
Merlin grinned. “Thank you, Arthur.”
When he was nearly out of the room, he heard Arthur murmur, “It is I who should be thanking you.”
