Were Arthur, Morgana, and Gwen truly unaware of the Great Dragon's captivity below the Castle of Camelot? Did nobody else know either? Merlin could hardly believe it. Arthur and Morgana had to have been adventurous children, would they not have found their way inside to explore the cavern beneath their feet? These days, the entrance to the cave was shoddily guarded at best, and the occasional guards surely would let word get out about their massive captive?
Eventually, Merlin had to ask Gaius about it. "Why does nobody talk about Kilgharrah? They must know he's there."
The old physician shook his head. "They do not. The Great Dragon uses his magic to hide. He does not want to be discovered, shackled in chains, by just anyone who happens to stumble into his cavern. That he talks so freely with you means you're privileged indeed."
Merlin frowned. "An odd privilege, I'd say. All those cryptic prophecies. But at least he hasn't chargrilled and devoured me. I suppose that's a blessing in itself."
It has been said that any blessing is a curse in disguise. To this day, Merlin is still trying to decide whether this applies to his dealings with Kilgharrah.
