Merlin was in the bedroom when he heard Morgana’s shriek. He ran to the living room, thinking something was terribly wrong. He glanced at Morgana, who was currently standing on the sofa. “What is it?”
“A mouse,” she pointed. “Under there.”
Merlin followed her gaze to the loveseat. “Oh. I have just the thing for that.”
“Not one of those horrid mousetraps, I hope.”
“Nope. It’s one of those catch and release types.” He grinned. “I knew you wouldn’t like one of the other kinds.”
“Thank you, Merlin.”
“Of course, love. I’ll just go and fetch it now.” He walked to their hall closet and rummaged around in it for a bit until he located the mousetrap. Next, he searched until he located the mousehole in their second bedroom. He placed the trap in front of the hole and went back to the living room. Morgana was now sitting cross-legged on the sofa, watching the loveseat.
“Did you find the trap?” she asked.
“Yes, and I put it in front of the mouse’s hole, so when it runs for the hills, the trap will capture it,” he replied. “But that means I’ll have to scare it back there. Are you ready for that?”
“As ready as I’m going to get.”
“Good. Here goes.” He moved the loveseat slightly and yelled “bah!” to get the mouse moving. Sure enough, it came running out toward the bedrooms, turning into the second one. Merlin followed and watched as the trap captured the furry creature. He picked up the trap and carried it back to the living room.
“My champion!” Morgana cried, standing and running over to embrace him.
“All in a day’s work.”
“Now drive someplace reasonably far away and release it.”
Merlin bowed. “Your wish is my command, my lady.” He grabbed his keys and left through the front door. He knew of the perfect wood just a few kilometers away that would suit as a new home for the mouse.
