“Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!“
Just as Arthur had gone to chat with Gwaine who was working the little ‘tower’ in Ealdor – which was no more than a tiny little metal hut on the edge of the airfield – he heard the call and an icy fist clutched his heart. He was here to pick Merlin up from his flight to Calgary, not to hear him crash.
This was one of his worst fears. He knew that Merlin was a great pilot, had even heard that some people called him the best pilot in the North, but the little tin can of a plane couldn’t be trusted and who knew what the weather was doing.
Gwaine sprung into action while Arthur grabbed the binoculars, stepped out of the hut and searched the sky for Berta. Merlin should have been visible already. Was he too low to be seen? Already crashed into the trees somewhere? But his voice still came over the speakers.
“Arthur.”
A gentle shake on his shoulder woke him up and he needed a moment to realize that he was in Merlin’s house and this was just a dream.
“Arthur, what’s wrong?”
Merlin. Merlin was here!
Arthur sat up and turned to wrap his arms around him.
One day he would tell him about the recurring nightmare.
