Merlin was whistling as he entered their home. He found Morgana in the nursery with Ellie, rocking her to sleep. With a couple of looks, he understood that it would be only a couple more minutes until Ellie was sound asleep. He left the room and went back into the living room with his surprise.
After a few minutes, he heard the door close and Morgana walked into the living room. She wore a frown on her face and sat down heavily on the sofa. “That little girl is wearing me out,” she said.
“I’m sorry, love. I know it’s been rough lately since she’s started teething,” Merlin replied.
“Yeah, it has. I wish you could be around more, but I understand you and Arthur are on a tight deadline.”
“It really sucks. But this particular project will be over in a week. In fact, I brought you something to celebrate that.” From behind his back, he withdrew a bouquet of red roses and handed them to her.
“Merlin! Thank you so much!” She held them up to her nose and inhaled deeply. “Oh, these smell so good.”
“You’re welcome. You more than deserve them.” He knelt next to her. “I love you. I know it’s hard now, but things will get better, I know they will.”
Tears ran down Morgana’s cheeks and she bent down to throw her arms around Merlin. “I love you, too.”
They stayed that way for a little while until their stomachs eventually reminded them it was time to eat. They laughed and made their way into the kitchen, where they prepared a delicious meal together.
