“I know the perfect girl for you,” said Merlin, while sitting across from Lance.

“You have no idea how many times I’ve heard that,” replied Lance, taking a sip of his coffee.

“Hear me out. Her name’s Elena. She’s blonde and not super vivacious. I know you’re into girls a bit more subdued.”

“True. Tell me more.”

I knew her in high school. She was a bit odd, didn’t know how to wear makeup properly. But she’s undergone a transformation since then, realizing that she actually is pretty and can stand up for herself.”

Lance took another sip. “Interesting.”

“Let me set you up. Even if you don’t end up dating, she’s a great friend. You won’t regret it.”

“All right, Merlin, because it’s you I’ll do it. But this is the only time.”

“I’ll have you know I have a great reputation as a matchmaker.”

“That’s news to me.”

“Relax, Merlin. I said I’d go. Just arrange it and let me know.” Lance got up.

“I’ll give you a call once I have the details.”

“Great! See you around, Merlin.”

Merlin tossed off a wave and picked up his phone. It looked like he was going to get started right now.

That evening, Lance got the call from Merlin. “You’re set up for this Friday at seven. You’re going to a little Italian bistro called Mario’s. It’s great! You’ll meet Elena there.”

“How will I know it’s her?”

“She’ll be wearing something pink and will be carrying a yellow rose. Those are her favorite flowers, by the way.”

“Thanks for the tip, Merlin.”

“No problem. Have fun!” Merlin disconnected.

That got Lance thinking about all sorts of things, like what he should wear and whether he really should bring yellow roses. By the time the date rolled around, he found himself in a sport coat and nice jeans, holding a dozen yellow roses.

Just inside Mario’s, Lance found Elena. His jaw dropped—she was gorgeous! He introduced himself and handed her the flowers. She gushed over them as they were led to their table.

Halfway through dinner, Lance had to admit he was having a good time. Elena practically sparkled, and she had a lot of dirt on Merlin’s high school days. He found himself laughing a lot, which was rare for him. After dinner, they splurged on dessert, a delicious chocolate cheesecake.

They argued good naturedly about who was going to take the check. Elena finally let him take it. As they waited for the server to return with his card, he said, “I’d like to see you again.”

“I’d love to bee seen by you again,” she replied with a smile.

“Great! How do you feel about picnics in the park?”

“Love them, but only if you let me bring something.”

“Of course.”

“It’s a date! Let’s exchange numbers.” So they did, and arranged to meet on Saturday, the week following.

Lance smiled as he escorted Elena from the restaurant and into a waiting taxi. He was going to have to thank Merlin for this. He’d been right about Elena and him.
