Lance met Elena at the city’s largest park. She kissed him on the cheek and refused to hand him her bag. She didn’t want to overburden him, and he had a big picnic basket.
They strolled through the park looking for a bit of shade. Finally, they found a space beneath a large tree and Lance spread the blanket. He led Elena to sit on it and plunked the basket down next to her. He opened the basket and pulled out a couple of wineglasses. “Wine?” he asked, showing her the bottle.
“Oh yes,” she replied. “Thank you.”
“My pleasure.” He poured her a glass and handed it to her. He then began pulling out various dishes for them to eat, and plates and utensils. “What did you bring?”
“A nod to our first date.” She pulled a circular container out of her bag and revealed a chocolate cheesecake.
“Oh, I’m really a very good baker.” She grinned.
And with that, they started sampling the dishes Lance had brought. Elena exclaimed over each one, asking him, “Did you make all these?”
“I did, actually.”
They talked a bit, laughed more, and ate too much. Lance found himself liking Elena even more than he had at the end of their first date. He got an idea in his head and dismissed it. It was too early. But no, the idea wouldn’t leave him.
Before she could place the last dish in the basket, Lance covered her hand with his. “Elena, may I kiss you?”
Elena blushed, then nodded. Lance leaned forward and pressed his lips to hers. She was sweet—so very sweet. He didn’t want to stop, but pulled away after a few delicious seconds. “Thank you.”
She fluttered her eyelashes. “You’re very welcome.”
He helped her up and folded the blanket. Picking up the backet, he offered her his arm and she took it. He escorted her out of the park and to her car. “I’ll call you. I want to see you again, soon.”
“Definitely. And Lance?”
“I’ll come up with the date idea, so I guess I’ll be calling you.”
They both laughed. “See you soon then.”
“See you soon.” And with that, she got in her car and drove away, leaving Lance already missing her.
