He runs his fingertips along the criss-cross pattern on his soft flesh, eyes following the silver and pale pink lines, remembering each and every one.
Remembering the cold, sharp, clean feeling of the blade slicing into his thigh, in those moments he’d sit and watch the silver disappear and feel nothing. He’d watch the red liquid trail over his skin and drip onto the waiting towel. As soon as he let go of the blade the pain would rise, set in, a sharp stinging that would bring tears to his blue eyes.
As the blood flowed and the stinging pain numbed all other feelings, he could finally breath. In this void, in this pain filled numbness, his father couldn’t touch him. His harsh words couldn’t get through, his eyes filled with disappointment couldn’t see, his absence wasn’t noted.
It was just for him – they were his scars.
