Merlin waited centuries upon centuries for Arthur’s return. Finally, when climate change and war had had their effect upon the earth, magic prompted Merlin to return to what had once been the Lake of Avalon.
There sat Arthur, looking puzzled. “Merlin! It’s great to see you. But what happened to the lake?”
“Climate change,” replied Merlin.
“What’s that?”
“To explain that, I have to take you home.”
“Lead the way.”
During the journey home, Merlin talked about some of the events that had happened over the centuries. Arthur was disturbed by many and expressed regret that he hadn’t returned earlier. But Merlin reassured him that there was not much he could have done to prevent the tragedies.
Once they were back at Merlin’s home, Merlin booted up his computer and showed Arthur pictures of climate change results around the world. “Some of these are no better than hellscapes,” Arthur said.
“I agree. And these results were mostly preventable,” Merlin replied. “That’s the truly sad part.”
“Then why am I back if I can’t change what’s happened?”
“That’s a very good question. Why don’t we work on that later? I’m guessing you want a bath, normal clothing, and food, though maybe not in that order.”
Arthur grinned. “Very good, Merlin. And thank you for being there for me.”
“Where else would I be?”
