Camelot Drabble Prompt bingo 512: spring
Author’s Notes: there is no such natural spring in Merlin’s cave. People do get caught inside and drown so it’s a bit of a dangerous place at times.

Arthur didn’t have far to go, just a walk down from his cottage, but just in case, he brought the token she’d suggested a few days back.
It was a ring Merlin had won for him at one of the pub quizzes. The man was a wonder with history and when he got going, he could tell the most ridiculous stories about famous and not so famous people.
The category had been Shakespeare and Merlin knew every play, even the sonnets.
Sometimes, he would recite some as he shagged Arthur, shoving himself deep inside at the end of each line, making Arthur repeat after him, even as he drove Arthur wild with desire. Later, he’d explain what Willy S. had been about, how some words meant completely different things when said just right. And then he’d say them, and Arthur would want Merlin to fuck him all over again.
The ring was cheap plastic but there was a dragon on it, and Merlin had grinned when he won it, pledging fealty to his king as he put it on Arthur’s thumb. Merlin wanted it fast and furious that night, all hands and mouth, but Arthur slowed him down, rubbing the ring against Merlin’s lips, and making him promise to behave.
Now that he thought about it, Arthur realised that Merlin’s eyes had turned golden in that moment, but he had dismissed it then as a trick of the light. It struck him odd at the time but later, when Merlin lay there, silken ropes holding him tight, and Arthur slowly, slowly dragged ecstasy out of him, he forgot everything else.
Standing by the entrance to Merlin’s cave, the ocean crashing against the rocks, he shook himself free of the memories. It had driven him mad before, the longing and the grief, and he wasn’t about to repeat the mistake.
He just needed to find Merlin and make sure he was all right.
Lifting his head, he saw Morgana pick her way carefully down the rocks. It didn’t help that she was wearing ridiculously out-of-place boots and wobbling as she stepped down into the gritty sand.
“You don’t have much time. Tide’s out now but it can be dangerous in the cave when the water starts flooding in,” Morgana said, looking him over and humming disapproval. “You have the token?”
He showed it to her, not telling her just how much it meant to him, and she must have seen it was just a cheap toy, but she didn’t berate him for it, just nodded. “The spring is in the back of the cave, but look to the left as you reach the end. There is a stone shelf in there, and a natural bowl in the rock. It fills with pure water as the sea retreats.”
“I’ve been in the cave half a dozen times and never seen it,” Arthur said, thinking that she was mistaken or else taken in by her girlfriend and all that magical nonsense.
Reaching over and grasping his arm, she turned solemn. “Most people don’t know about it. The reflections make it hard to see.” Shaking him a little, she said, “Place it in the water and concentrate on what you want. But don’t linger too long. People have drowned in there when they miscalculate the time. Don’t make me come in and save your sorry hide.”
“I won’t,” Arthur said, patting her hand and then stepping back. “This is ridiculous, you know.”
“I know you think so,” Morgana nodded her head toward the cave. “Hurry now. The tide is about to turn.”
