Once
Merlin had lost count of all the times Arthur had almost died. All those times when his magic had miraculously tipped the scales of fate, so that Arthur lived to see another day. It had happened so frequently, he'd nearly begun to take it for granted. But of course, as Morgana had spitefully told him once - he needed to succeed every time. Camelot's enemies only needed to get lucky once.
His magic useless now, Merlin watched the boat carrying Arthur's lifeless form from shore. Morgana might be dead, but today nevertheless was the day she finally won her long game.
