Tromping through a wet forest was not Merlin’s idea of fun. Neither was the hunting Arthur had been attempting before Merlin talked him out of it. It was just too wet and too cold for animals to be about, not that Merlin enjoyed hunting in the most optimal conditions either.

He and Arthur were, as usual, arguing, when Merlin heard the twang of an arrow being released from a crossbow. It headed directly for Arthur, so Merlin tripped him. In the split second between that and Arthur standing again, furious, Merlin had dispatched the brigand with a gesture.

“You deliberately tripped me!” Arthur raged. “Why on earth would you do that?”

Merlin pointed at the arrow embedded in the tree in front of them.

“Oh. You could have said something.”

“Are you kidding me? You would have been dead before I could convince you to move,” Merlin replied.

“Well, I suppose thanks are in order. Thank you, Merlin.”

“You’re welcome. Now can we please continue our walk home? It’s cold out here.”

“There you go again, whining about the temperature . . .”
